Be Aware of the Risks

As the snowpack continues to accumulate in the mountains, the risk of avalanches is on the rise. Avalanches can be deadly, and it is important to be aware of the risks and take precautions when traveling in avalanche terrain. Avalanche danger is highest after recent snowfall, especially when the snow is wet or heavy. Strong winds can also increase the risk of avalanches.

There are a number of things you can do to stay safe in avalanche terrain. First, check the avalanche forecast before you go. The forecast will tell you the current avalanche danger for the area you are planning to travel in. If the danger is high, it is best to avoid traveling in avalanche terrain. Second, take an avalanche safety course. An avalanche safety course will teach you how to recognize avalanche terrain, how to avoid avalanches, and how to rescue someone who has been caught in an avalanche.

Finally, always be prepared for the possibility of an avalanche. Carry a whistle, an avalanche beacon, and a shovel in case you are caught in an avalanche. If you are caught in an avalanche, try to stay calm and float on top of the snow. Once the avalanche has stopped, use your whistle and beacon to signal for help.
