Biggest Cruise Ship Fuel Consumption

Fuel Consumption of Cruise Ships

The Importance of Fuel Quality and Engine Efficiency

Cruise ships are some of the largest and most fuel-intensive vessels in the world. The biggest cruise ship, at 360 meters long, consumes almost double the fuel of an average vessel. Therefore, fuel quality grade and engine efficiency are of utmost importance for cruise ship operators.

Fuel Consumption Factors

The average fuel consumption per day of a cruise ship depends on various factors, including:

  • Ship size
  • Passenger capacity
  • Itinerary
  • Operational practices

Average Fuel Consumption

On average, a large modern cruise ship can consume between 100 and 300 tons of fuel per day. This translates to approximately 30 to 90 gallons of nautical miles (gnm) or 120 to 360 liters of nautical miles (lnm).

Mid-Sized Cruise Ships

Mid-sized cruise ships typically consume anywhere from 100 to 300 metric tons of fuel per day. For example, the Oasis-class vessels, some of the largest cruise ships in the world, can consume up to 250 tons of fuel per day.
