Antibiotics Linked to Dangerous Skin Rashes

New Study Raises Concerns

Risks Associated with Common Antibiotics

A new study has raised concerns about the potential risks associated with two commonly prescribed antibiotics, warning that they may put patients at risk of dangerous skin rashes.

The study, published in the journal JAMA Dermatology, found that patients who took antibiotics belonging to the nitrofurantoin and sulfonamide classes were more likely to develop severe skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a rare but serious condition that causes the skin and mucous membranes to blister and peel. Toxic epidermal necrolysis is even more severe, and can be fatal in some cases.

The study found that the risk of these skin reactions was highest in patients who took the antibiotics for longer than 10 days.

The researchers said that their findings highlight the importance of using antibiotics only when they are necessary, and of using them for the shortest possible duration.
