Cardinals Trade Tyler O'Neill to Red Sox

Outfielder Acquired for Pitchers Robertson, Santos

The Boston Red Sox have acquired outfielder Tyler O'Neill from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for pitchers Nick Robertson and Victor Santos, the teams announced Friday.

O'Neill, a 28-year-old right-handed hitter, has been a solid performer for the Cardinals over the past few seasons. In 2022, he batted .280 with 14 home runs and 50 RBIs in 96 games.

Red Sox Address Outfield Need

The Red Sox were in need of an outfielder after trading Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. O'Neill is expected to fill that void and provide some much-needed power to the middle of the lineup.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, get two young pitchers in return. Robertson, a 23-year-old right-hander, has a 3.12 ERA in 43 appearances at the Triple-A level this season. Santos, a 21-year-old right-hander, has a 2.95 ERA in 21 starts at the High-A level.

Details of the Trade

  • Red Sox receive: Outfielder Tyler O'Neill
  • Cardinals receive: Pitcher Nick Robertson, Pitcher Victor Santos

The trade is expected to be finalized on Saturday.
