Galveston Health Officials Caution Beachgoers Amid Flesh Eating Bacteria Increase

Flesh-Eating Bacteria Cases Surge in Galveston County

Health officials issue urgent warning for beachgoers

Vibrio bacteria poses serious health risks

Galveston, TX - The Galveston County Health District has issued a public health alert due to a rise in cases of Vibrio, a flesh-eating bacteria. Health officials are urging beachgoers to take precautions to prevent infection.

Vibrio bacteria are found in warm coastal waters and can enter the body through open wounds or consumption of raw seafood. Symptoms of Vibrio infection can include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, the bacteria can cause skin infections, such as cellulitis, and even lead to sepsis.

To prevent infection, health officials recommend the following measures:

  • Avoid swimming in areas with known Vibrio outbreaks.
  • Wear water shoes or boots to protect your feet from open wounds.
  • Cover open wounds with waterproof bandages.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after handling seafood or swimming in coastal waters.
  • Cook seafood thoroughly before eating it.

If you suspect you have a Vibrio infection, seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing serious complications.
