Bellamys Wales Held By Turkey In Nations League Opener

Bellamy's Wales Held By Turkey In Nations League Opener

A frustrating start to the Nations League for Wales

Wales were held to a 2-2 draw by Turkey in their Nations League opener in Cardiff on Thursday night.

Kieffer Moore gave Wales the lead, but Turkey hit back through Caglar Soyuncu and Halil Dervisoglu to take the lead. Gareth Bale equalised from the penalty spot, but Wales were unable to find a winner.

It was a disappointing result for Wales, who were hoping to make a winning start to their Nations League campaign. They will now face Belgium in their next match on Sunday.

Moore gives Wales the lead

Kieffer Moore gave Wales the lead in the 12th minute. The Cardiff City striker rose highest to meet a cross from Harry Wilson and headed home from close range.

It was Moore's first goal for Wales since scoring in the 1-0 win over the Czech Republic in March 2021.

Turkey hit back through Soyuncu and Dervisoglu

Turkey hit back to take the lead in the second half. Caglar Soyuncu equalised in the 51st minute with a header from a corner.

Halil Dervisoglu then put Turkey ahead in the 64th minute with a fine finish from the edge of the area.

Bale equalises from the penalty spot

Wales were awarded a penalty in the 77th minute after Ben Davies was fouled in the area. Gareth Bale stepped up to take the spot-kick and made no mistake, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

It was Bale's 39th goal for Wales.

Wales unable to find a winner

Wales pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but they were unable to find a way through the Turkey defence.

The result leaves Wales bottom of Group A4 with one point from their opening match.
