Illinois QB Luke Altmyer Continues To Play Mistake-Free

Despite an underwhelming passing attack, Luke Altmyer doing what he needs to win

Illini signal caller has yet to throw an interception in 2023

Coming out of high school, Luke Altmyer was celebrated for his impressive arm strength. NFL scouts raved about the zip on his fastball, and some even went as far as to compare him to Patrick Mahomes. Altmyer didn't see the field much in his first two seasons on campus but took over as the full-time starter in 2023.

Despite the hype, Altmyer didn't exactly light the world on fire as a passer in 2023. He completed just 55% of his passes and threw for only 1,900 yards, which ranked near the bottom of the Big Ten. However, Altmyer did show a knack for protecting the football, as he finished the season with only four interceptions.

Altmyer has picked up where he left off in 2023. Through the first four games of the season, he has yet to throw an interception. He has also completed over 60% of his passes and has thrown for over 200 yards in each of the Illini's four games.

While Altmyer's passing numbers may not be eye-popping, he is doing what he needs to do to win games. The Illini are 3-1 this season and are in contention for a bowl game. Altmyer's steady play has been a big reason for Illinois' success.

Of course, it's still early in the season, and Altmyer could still hit a rough patch. However, he has shown that he is a capable passer who can protect the football. If he can continue to play mistake-free, the Illini could be a surprise team in 2023.
